Builders uncovered the mysterious specimen during construction work.

It has a small body, four limbs, a disfigured face with a pronounced nose, claws, and a tail.

Authorities say samples are being analysed by university researchers.

The foetus itself is being exhibited at the Museo de los Duendes – translated as Goblin Museum – in the municipality of Huasca de Ocampo.

Municipal mayor Francisco Mayoral Flores said the mummified remains could be from a “goblin or a nagual.”

In Mesoamerican mythology, a nagual is a human with the ability to shape-shift into an animal counterpart.

The mayor said: “Everyone can value it themselves based on their beliefs and traditions.”

Huasca de Ocampo is a well-known region for legends related to goblins, naguals and other mythical Mayan entities such as aluxes.

The mayor added: “If it had been found in another municipality, it would not have been relevant.

“But due to the themes of goblins and the mystical here, there is a cultural and social demand to give it importance.

“Doctors and vets have stated that it is a malformed foetus of a cat or dog.

“However, samples have already been taken to determine a scientific explanation.”

But residents have branded the idea of the creature being a goblin “ridiculous”.

One resident asked: “Are you telling me that goblins are born human-sized and get tiny as they grow?”

Another said: “Is this a joke?”

And a third wrote: “Good thing it’s a magical town!”

It comes after Mexico’s president was mocked after sharing a photo of what he said appeared to be a mythological woodland spirit similar to an elf.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador did not appear to be joking as he posted a bizarre picture on social media suggesting it could be an “aluxe” – a mischievous woodland spirit in Mayan folklore.

Obrador shared the snap on Twitter, saying: “I share two photos of our supervision of the Mayan Train works.

“One, taken by an engineer three days ago, apparently from an aluxe; another, by Diego Prieto of a splendid pre-Hispanic sculpture in Ek Balam.

“Everything is mystical.”

The photo – taken at night – shows a tree with a branch forming what looks like a halo of hair, and what may be stars forming the figure’s eyes.

Engineers and workers are in the Yucatan peninsula, constructing a tourist train that is the president’s pet project.

But Obrador was ridiculed on social media for sharing the bizarre snaps.

One user commented: “I thought it was a parody but it is the president’s account.”

A second said: “The Aluxes are as ‘real’ as your ‘achievements’.”
