Creature Commandos is, along with Superman: Legacy, one of the few projects from the new DCU that’s been in development for a while now, since it’ll be one of the first ones to see the light. James Gunn hopes the animated series will surprise everyone.
Back in January, the co-CEOs of DC Studios shared a list of the first batch of movies and tv shows that will form the forst “chapter” in the revamped DCU, titled Gods & Monsters. This list includes films starring Superman, Batman and Supergirl, and series centered on the Green Lantern universe, Booster Gold, Swamp Thing and much more.
Among the more obscure projects announced was an animated adaptation of the team created by J. M. DeMatteis and Pat Broderick in the 1980s, Creature Commandos. This will be the first animated show from Gunn and Safran’s DCU, and will introduce some not-so-popular characters to a new generation. The cast is led by Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr, Maria Bakalova as Ilana Rostovic, Indira Varma as The Bride, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, and Sean Gunn as G.I. Robot.
This will be an ambitious project for the studio, especially as Gunn confirmed that if a star joins the franchise to play an animated character, that character will be played by the same actor if they should cross into live-action. it’ll be played by the same actor.
Creature Commandos Will Offer Something Different
Answering fans on his Instagram page as he usually does (courtesy of Reddit user DCEUleaks), Gunn shared his excitement for the upcoming show, while also confirming it is one of the few productions currently not affected by the strike:
“It’s animated so it’s separate from the strike. We’re working on it. I love it. I think it’s going to be so different than what people expect.”
Stranger Things’ David Harbour recently spoke about the show too, claiming it’s one of the best things Gunn has ever done. For now, no details have been shared about the plot of the series, which will have seven episodes in its first season, and will take place before Superman: Legacy, chronologically.
Creature Commandos appeared for the first time in Weird War Tales #93, and started as part of Project M, a government organization specializing in biotechnology. Its members are a group of metahumans created especially to fight during World War II. A modern version of the group was introduced in 2000, created by writer Tim Truman and illustrator Scot Eaton.
No release date has been confirmed yet for the animated series, but rumors claim it will arrive next year, which means it’ll be the first official project from the new DCU to see the light, since Superman: Legacy will be release in 2025, if it doesn’t get delayed due to the strikes.
