It’s worth stating up front that you’re probably going to hate Copenhagen Cowboy. Yes, I can sense your befuddlement. You’re probably wondering “Why would this guy recommend something to me that he thinks I’m probably going to hate?” Well, it’s my experience that most people are bewildered by the output of the Danish visionary director Nicolas Winding Refn. Perhaps it’s the stilted performances, perhaps it’s the glacial pacing, perhaps it’s the ultraviolence, perhaps it’s all of that and more. The byNWR experience is not for everyone, and that’s okay!
However, if you’ve somehow acquired the taste for NWR’s sordid, neon-drenched worldview, it’s time to count your blessings. Every frame of Copenhagen Cowboy oozes mood and atmosphere in his very recognizable and inimitable style (and makes you wonder what Netflix, a content mill that aims most of its middling content at roundbellies, was hoping for when they greenlit this series). Refnheads won’t mind that the plot machinations, which loosely revolve around the underworld of Eastern European scumbag sex traffickers, are secondary to the VIBES. This is 6 hours of pure, uncut NWR, a series that solidifies his reputation as one of the few auteurs who refuses to bend the knee.
