Constantine 2 Not a Sure Thing Says Keanu Reeves: ‘We’re Trying’

News of a sequel to the 2005 DC outing Constantine has drifted in and out of the headlines for some time. But while it has recently seemed like the project is finally a go, Keanu Reeves has revealed that he is not sure whether Constantine 2 is as much of a sure thing as we all thought. Speaking with Comicbook.com, Reeves assured fans that he is “trying” to get Constantine 2 the green light, but ultimately, he does not know if it will ever happen.

“I was hoping it would, but we don’t know. Yeah, we’re trying.”

Released back in 2005, and based on the DC comic Hellblazer, the first Constantine stars Keanu Reeves as an ordinary man with an extraordinary gift. Unknown to most people, the world is crowded with spirits both good and evil who walk among us in human guise. One of the few who can see these spirits is John Constantine, but the responsibility of his vision is more than he can stand, and, as a teenager, he attempts to take his own life. Saved from death, Constantine must now atone for his actions by acting as a guardian in the middle ground between Paradise and Hell and becoming a detective of the occult and the paranormal.

Directed by Francis Lawrence, Constantine did well at the box office but was met with a mixed response critically. Audiences though were much more enamored, with Keanu Reeves’ recent, well-deserved popularity leading many to call for him to reprise the role as the paranormal investigator.

Constantine 2 Was Officially Announced Last Year

Warner Bros. Pictures

A sequel to Constantine was officially announced by Warner Bros. Pictures last year, with both Reeves and Lawrence reportedly set to return. Constantine 2 will be written by Akiva Goldsman, who has revealed some details regarding the direction of the follow—up.

“The character is very much Keanu and the way he and Francis saw the world of good and evil, and the wonderful and authentic noir where there is a world behind the world of good and evil coexist with our world right up close. Beyond that, we are still discovering it as I am writing the script,” Goldsman revealed.

Of course, projects start and stop all the time, but Reeves’ concern likely stems from the fact that DC will undergo a total recalibration courtesy of James Gunn and Peter Safran. While the plan does include an Elseworlds strategy, in which stories not tied to the shared cinematic universe will be told, it’s possible that Constantine 2 runs contrary to what Gunn and Safran have in mind.

For now, Keanu Reeves will reprise another role. That of John Wick in this month’s John Wick: Chapter 4. The sequel finds the titular assassin uncovering a path to defeating the High Table, but before he can earn his freedom, Wick must face off against a new enemy with powerful alliances across the globe and forces that turn old friends into new foes.

John Wick: Chapter 4 is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on March 24, 2023.
