CITIZEN KANG (1992)

Kang the Conqueror is back! And his latest scheme is incomprehensible. The Avengers and Fantastic Four are drawn into a bizarre conflict between ‘Nebula’ and Kang which becomes little more than a footnote in their history. It’s rare that I’ll outright try to dissuade you from reading a story, but this is definitely one to miss.

Captain America heads to a small town called Timely in Wisconsin, which is the last place anyone saw the Vision. While investigating the disappearance of one of his fellow Avengers, Cap is transported back in time to 2700 BC where he allies with Gilgamesh against the alien Kronans. Thor searches for the missing Vision and Captain America. And, like Cap, is cast back in time when he arrives in Timely. Arriving in ancient Avalon, Thor encounters Prester John who mistakes him as an ally of Kang and strikes him down with the Evil Eye. Prester John asks Thor to help him slay the invading Vikings, but Thor fears the effect on the timeline and opposes him. Thor is then transported to the early 20th century. Back in the present, Nebula convinces Doctor Druid to aid her against Kang…

Fantastic Four Annual #25[1/5]
Doctor Druid turns to the Fantastic Four to help him and Nebula travel through time to get to Kang. Meanwhile, the Avengers start searching for their missing teammates and soon find their way to Chronopolis where ‘Nebula’ turns the two teams against each other. Just as Druid stops both teams from fighting, they’re find themselves stared down by Kang’s elite warriors, handpicked from through time… the Anachronauts!

Avengers Annual #21[1/4]

Despite their combined power, the Anachronauts overpower the Avengers and Fantastic Four and take them prisoner. Caged before Kang, the villain announces his scheme to infiltrate society through its technology. Captain America, Vision and Thor suddenly emerge. ‘Nebula’ makes her move against Kang, but he survives and reveals her to be Ravonna Renslayer. She instead announces herself as the Terminatrix and attacks Kang, while Raa of the Anachronauts frees the Avengers and Fantastic Four. The chaotic battle ends when Kang pushes the Terminatrix out of Mjolnir‘s path, taking the hit himself. Upset and confused, Ravonna departs with the unconscious Kang, taking his place as ruler of Chronopolis while he remains comatose – their previous situations reversed.

Avengers Annual #21 (1992)

Ravonna Renslayer/Terminatrix reflects on her and Kang’s recent past and her new role in Chronopolis during THE WARLORD.

Doctor Druid continues to fight alongside his former-fellow Avengers as an ally.

Avengers Annual #22 (1993)

Professor Justin Alphonse Gamble assists Terminatrix and the Anachronauts to correct that time paradox that allowed the Ebony Blade to exist despite never having been created.

Avengers: The Terminatrix Objective #1-4 (1993)

Terminatrix fights her future self, Revelation, to find a cure for Kang; Kang is revived, but soon finds himself at odds with Terminatrix again when she tries to kill him.

Immortus returns (disguised as Kang) during THE CROSSING.

Avengers Forever #3 (1999)

Most of the Anachronauts are killed when Immortus attacks Chronopolis.

Avengers Forever #9 (1999)

Kang dismisses his actions his attempt to subvert all technology throughout time to his will as as his “lowest point inspired by boredom”; Terminatrix is revealed to have been killed by the forces of Immortus.

Avengers #48 (2002)

Kang’s role as the instigator of robotics in the 20th century allows him to control the attacking Sentinels during THE KANG DYNASTY.
