CinemaCon 2023 Recap – IndieWire

Another year, another CinemaCon, and a whole lot of movies with big plans for the months ahead. This edition of the annual exhibitors conference in Las Vegas found major studios flexing serious muscle with movies they hope will become huge hits, with expectations higher than ever after “Top Gun: Maverick” launched there 12 months ago. Famous faces ranging from Ryan Gosling to Martin Scorsese made their way through Caesar’s Palace with clips from “Barbie,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and many others generating enthusiastic responses.

Warner Bros. Discovery was confident about “The Flash” to screen the whole movie and set the stage for what might end up as the biggest superhero movie of a year filled with them, while Apple and Amazon made it clear that, despite their streaming ambitions, they were still invested in movie theaters.

How did all these moments play on the ground?

For this week’s episode of IndieWire’s weekly Screen Talk podcast, Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson are joined by film reporter Brian Welk, who covered the proceedings. Welk breaks down the buzz from CinemaCon and explains which studios seemed best-positioned to make hits out of their upcoming slates. He also shares his own spoiler-free take on “The Flash” and why it stands a good shot at generating enthusiasm well beyond Nevada.
