Chukwudi Iwuji teases his irredeemable and unsympathetic take on the High Evolutionary, the villain at the center of Guardians of the Galaxy 3

No matter how brutal a villain may seem, there’s typically a moment which allows the audience to sympathize with them, or at least understand their goals. It doesn’t sound like there will be much to sympathize with when it comes to the High Evolutionary, the villain at the heart of the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.

Described as a brilliant scientist, the High Evolutionary is played by Chukwudi Iwuji, who told GamesRadar that there’s no humanity left in his character. “He doesn’t have any redeeming qualities,” Iwuji said. “He’s a proper villain you know, proper with a capital P. He’s going after something terrifying, he makes you very uncomfortable, and you’re waiting for him to get his comeuppance. And those [qualities] are very fun to play without any apology or any craving for sympathy from the audience’s side.

The High Evolutionary specializes in genetic engineering and played a part in Rocket’s creation, which goes to some pretty dark places, something which surprised the actor. “I was a little bit surprised I won’t lie,” Iwuji said. “We’ve all come up on Marvel movies. We’ve seen the sympathy that a lot of the movies draw out for the villains, which is not the case here.” The High Evolutionary isn’t the only villain we’ll see in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, as Adam Warlock (Will Poulter) and Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki) are also on hand to cause our heroes a little grief.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 finds our beloved band of misfits settling into life on Knowhere. But it isn’t long before their lives are upended by the echoes of Rocket’s turbulent past. Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him on a dangerous mission to save Rocket’s life—a mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them. The first reactions to the threequel have been reasonably positive, with some calling it the best Marvel movie since Endgame.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 will hit theaters on May 5th, so be sure to check out the review from our own Chris Bumbray.
