Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer Doesnt Hold Back The Intensity

The first trailer for Christopher Nolan’s long awaited Oppenheimer, one of the most anticipated films of 2023 is finally here. The teaser premiered earlier this year. The intensity and talent in the film is practically pouring out of the screen.

The film which stars Cillian Murphy as J Robert Oppenheimer, the father of ther Atomic bomb has worked with Nolan on five previous projects (the Dark Knight trilogy, Inception and Dunkirk). The plot follows his work with a team of scientists during the Manhattan Project, leading to the development of the atomic bomb. The film has been described as an “epic thriller that thrusts audiences into the pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it.” The script is written by Nolan and adapted from the Pulitzer winning biography “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer” by Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin.

Christopher Nolan spoke of Cillian Murphy’s incredible talents saying “”I’ve always known since I first met him – however many years ago it is now, almost 20 years – that he is one of the great actors, not just of his generation, but of all time. And I’ve been waiting for the project, and I know he has too, where we can collaborate with him as the lead, and I could put the most enormous weight – cinematic weight – on his shoulders, and watch him carry that burden. It was such a thrill to be able to call Cillian, and say, ‘This is it.’”

One of the most exciting things about this film, aside from the fact that it’s a Nolan movie is its all star cast, starring

Emily Blunt as biologist and botanist Kitty Oppenheimer, Matt Damon as Manhattan Project director Leslie Groves Jr., Robert Downey Jr. in the role of founding commissioner of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission Lewis Strauss, Florence Pugh as psychiatrist Jean Tatlock, Benny Safdie as theoretical physicist Edward Teller, Josh Hartnett as American nuclear scientist Ernest Lawrence.

The movie also stars Jack Quaid, Josh Peck, Rami Malek, Gary Oldman and more. In the trailer we get a glimpse at a few of these familiar faces. The trailer gives us a gritty first look at this WWII biopic, the second film of that subject that Nolan has made.

While speaking about Robert Downey Jr., Christopher Nolan, called him one of the greatest actors of all time, “We all know that Robert Downey Jr. is one of the great movie stars. It’s so easy to forget that he’s also one of the greatest actors of all time. Watching him lose himself in that performance, and completely lose himself in a character in this way, was just an incredible reminder of just what an amazing actor he is.”

Christopher Nolan is known for challenging himself by only using CGI when absolutely necessary, and he refused to use CGI in this film, he created that Atomic explosion without it. He says “It’s one of the most challenging projects I’ve ever taken on in terms of the scale”, and that is saying something coming from Christopher Nolan.

Oppenheimer opens in theaters on July 21, 2023.
