Chris Pratt Would Be Open To Returning As Star-Lord

Now that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has hit theaters, James Gunn’s time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has come to an end.

After directing all three Guardians of the Galaxy movies, Gunn is exiting the MCU in order to take over a full-time job as co-head of DC Studios.

With Gunn’s exit, fellow Guardians of the Galaxy cast members Zoe Saldana and Dave Bautista have already gone on record that they too will be leaving the franchise.

Chris Pratt Could Return

While two Guardians may be flying off into the sunset, Chris Pratt, who portrays the intergalactic team’s leader Star-Lord, would be willing to continue portraying the character. Although, he admits that it would be strange to do so without Gunn.

“It would be strange to continue [Star Lord’s] story without James,” Pratt said. “He’s done such a masterful job in the first three films. We really found the voice of Peter Quill together and without him, obviously, I would never have had this opportunity. He writes it, he directs it, he dreams up the music, it’s his imagination on screen.

So, to continue to tell the story, it would really be important to honor what he’s done in the first three films and to honor what the fans have grown to love about the character and not simply do it because people might show up to pay for it, you know?”

Others Have Directed The “Guardians”

While the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise was created under the watchful eye of Gunn, he was not the only director to handle the team.

The group appeared in supporting roles in Joy and Anthony Russo’s Avengers: Endgame and Avengers: Infinity War, in addition to Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder.

“I don’t want to be cynical in the approach and if that’s the case, I just wouldn’t do it at all. So maybe down the road if something makes sense I would do it but it would really have to check a lot of the right boxes.” Pratt explained.

As for his fellow co-stars, both Bautista and Saldana have been adamant that they are done with the franchise.

“I don’t think this is the end for the Guardians. It is the end for me, for Gamora.” Saldana stated.

Bautista for his part has long expressed no interest in continuing on without Gunn. The director’s exit, combined with the time-consuming makeup process needed to create Drax, has left the actor somewhat disillusioned.

“I’m so grateful for Drax. I love him. But there’s a relief [that it’s over],” Bautista recently said. “It wasn’t all pleasant. It was hard playing that role. The makeup process was beating me down. And I just don’t know if I want Drax to be my legacy — it’s a silly performance, and I want to do more dramatic stuff.”

While the team may look different in the future, with the introduction of Adam Warlock and Chris Pratt’s potential interest in returning, maybe we will see the Guardians again after all.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 opens in theaters nationwide on May 5.
