While Marvel has unquestionably been the king of the box office over the last decade, the studio has still faced backlash from both Hollywood insiders and fans for the kind of movies they make.
The “Marvel-ization” of Hollywood has been a hot topic of debate amongst movie insiders and fans alike. For Marvel’s stable of stars, however, the debate is deeply personal.

In a recent interview with British GQ, Thor star Chris Hemsworth responded to the criticism that Marvel films have received from such luminaries as Quentin Tarintino and Martin Scorsese.
“That’s super depressing when I hear that,” Hemsworth said about the directors’ comments on MCU films. “There goes two of my heroes I won’t work with. I guess they’re not a fan of me.”

Ever since Marvel’s ascent to the forefront of popular culture, detractors have decried the formulaic and SFX-heavy way the studio’s movies are made.

Tarantino for his part, called out Marvel for failing to create “real” movie stars.
“You have all these actors who have become famous playing these characters,” the Kill Bill director said during an interview on the 2 Bears, 1 Cave podcast. “But they’re not movie stars. Right? Captain America is the star. Or Thor is the star. I mean, I’m not the first person to say that. I think that’s been said a zillion times…but it’s like, you know, it’s these franchise characters that become a star.”

Meanwhile, Scorsese has long been public in his stance that Marvel films are not cinema.
“Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks,” he told Empire magazine back in 2019. “It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”

Hemsworth’s Response
In his interview with GQ, Hemsworth firmly stated that he was thankful for his time in the MCU. He did, however, acknowledge that there may have been a downside for the industry as a whole.
“I’m thankful that I have been a part of something that kept people in cinemas,” he continued. “Now, whether or not those films were to the detriment of other films, I don’t know. I don’t love when we start scrutinizing each other when there’s so much fragility in the business and in this space of the arts as it is.”
While Hemsworth believes that the comments from Tarantino and Scorsese would indicate that the directors have no interest in working with him, the Thor star says he would jump at the chance to collaborate.
“In a heartbeat, I would leap to work with any of them. But I say it more to the broader opinion around that topic. I don’t think any of us have the answer, but we’re trying.”

Whether the introduction of the MCU was a good thing, or a bad thing, for Hollywood as a whole, there is no doubt that Marvel has shaped the future of the movie industry. What that means, is anybody’s guess.
