Alongside his (hopefully) triumphant return as the Marvel icon Thor in this year’s comic book blockbuster, Avengers: Doomsday, Chris Hemsworth is now back in action hero mode as he prepares for a long-awaited
Netflix action thriller comeback. Thanks to his role in the MCU, and the superhero physique he has since acquired, Hemsworth has become one of the biggest action stars of the modern era, with the actor now pushing himself once again as he gears up for what’s sure to be another explosive streaming effort.
Landing on Netflix with a bang back in 2020, Extraction introduces Chris Hemsworth as Tyler Rake, a black ops mercenary with nothing to lose. Directed by Sam Hargrave, the first Extraction broke streaming records at the time, and sees Hemsworth’s action hero tasked with saving an Indian drug lord’s kidnapped son. But in the murky underworld of weapons dealers and drug traffickers, an already deadly mission approaches the impossible.
Following the release of the even more successful Extraction 2 (79% on Rotten Tomatoes to its predecessor’s 67%) in 2023, which finds Tyler Rake on another seemingly impossible rescue mission, Extraction 3 is finally on the horizon, with Chris Hemsworth not only revealing that he’s set to start filming the action sequel “in a couple of weeks,” but also showing off the hard work it takes to throw Taylor Rake back into the fray.
Since debuting as Thor all the way back in 2011, Hemsworth has become known for his sheer size as he strives to bring the god-like superhero from page to screen as accurately as possible. Evidently, he’s done it again, and is now working hard to maintain the leaner, more agile looks of Extraction’s no-nonsense mercenary.
Both director Sam Hargrave and Chris Hemsworth will return for the action thriller threequel, and while plot details remain under wraps, the follow-up is likely to follow Rake on yet another mission, with filming reportedly due to take place in India, Thailand, Prague and Hemsworth’s native Australia. No doubt one of these locations will feature another impressive “oner.”
Alongside Extraction 3, there are also now two spin-off projects currently in the works. The first finds Lupin’s Omar Sy leading the series, Mercenary, which is set in the same world as Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake and follows the eponymous mercenary “as he navigates a dangerous mission to rescue hostages in Libya,” according to the official synopsis. The other spin-off currently being locked and loaded sees hugely underrated action star and Hemsworth’s fellow MCU actor Ma Dong-seok, aka Don Lee taking the lead in his own Extraction movie, titled Tygo, which finds the Eternals star and human fist starring as a former child soldier turned mercenary who gets revenge on Korea’s underworld after a mission gone wrong.
