Hello, Captain America: Brave New World, and goodbye forever, Captain America: New World Order!
Marvel announced the name change this morning, confirming what many had expected.
The previous title, “New World,” came with some potentially controversial connotations.
Meanwhile, Brave New World perfectly embodies the message Marvel and its corporate owner, The Walt Disney Company, want to send here.
About Brave New World
We’re in new territory with Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) taking on the mantle of Captain America for the first time in a Marvel movie.
Disney previously told Wilson’s story of accepting this title in Captain America and the Winter Soldier.
In that story, Wilson showed his discomfort with the idea of the Captain America Shield, returning it to its “rightful” owner, the American government.
Over time, Wilson recognized that another would-be Shield-bearer, U.S. Agent John Walker, was wholly unworthy of the honorific.
So, Wilson reclaimed the gift Steve Rogers had presented, thereby setting the table for a new series of Captain America stories.
On May 3rd, 2024, the first of them will debut in theaters, and it promises to be a doozy.
Captain America vs. Thunderbolt
Harrison Ford has joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the role of Thunderbolt Ross, and we know he’ll appear in Thunderbolts as well.
Presumably, Ross will again play the heavy here, and the idea of fighting Indiana Jones/Han Solo clearly has actor Anthony Mackie giddy.
Here’s an Instagram post he made this morning:
“When Harrison Ford tells you how kicking ass should look, you listen! LoL… Thanks for the on set wisdom and laughs my friend!
Can’t wait to do it again… Marvel Studios’ Captain America: Brave New World in theaters May 3, 2024.”
Disney has selected the same weekend when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 debuted last month, indicating its high hopes for the project.
For Ford, this debut will come roughly ten months after Indiana Jones: Dial of Destiny debuts in theaters.
So, the screen legend will appear in three Disney movies from now through July 2024, presuming that Thunderbolts holds its current release date of July 26th, 2024.
Ford’s late-life trust in Disney ensures that he’ll finish his career in the spotlight in three tentpole blockbusters.
Meanwhile, Mackie lives out many of our childhood dreams of squaring off against Indiana Jones!
The promotional campaign for Captain America: Brave New World will start in earnest with the release of its first trailer, which you should expect soon.
