Paramount Pictures’ upcoming “Call of Duty” movie, based on the massively popular video game franchise, is definitely not going to feel like a comic book tentpole or make soldiers out to be superheroes, director Peter Berg recently told ComicBook. The “Friday Night Lights” and “Lone Survivor” director is helming the video game adaptation from a script by Taylor Sheridan. The movie will draw inspiration from the “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare” games.
“If you really look at the missions and the storylines and the characters like Captain Price, Soap, Ghost and Alex, these are complicated humans. These are not, and no disrespect, cartoon characters or comic books. These are very nuanced storylines; there’s a real soul to the ‘Modern Warfare’ universe. Yes, there’s violence and hardware and equipment and killing. But underneath it, I think the game, and the creators of the game, are really looking at the cost of war, the cost of having to be a warrior who’s, for whatever reason, chosen to put himself between real danger and the rest of us, and the burden that these guys carry.”
Beginning with “Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare” in 2007, the “Modern Warfare” storyline marked the first “Call of Duty” video game to break from the franchise’s original World War II setting. Paramount has yet to reveal any plot details for its upcoming film adaptation, nor has any casting information been made available.
Berg noted at CinemaCon earlier this year that “Taylor and I are both deeply connected to the special ops community” before a sizzle reel highlighted the video game franchise’s continued successes, including 1 billion players and a lifetime revenue of $35 billion.
Paramount announced its “Call of Duty” movie in September 2025. Sources said at the time that while the pact is focused on making one “Call of Duty” movie, the deal included the potential for Paramount to expand the “Call of Duty” universe across film and TV. The movie is currently on Paramount’s release schedule for June 30, 2028.
