2022 was a great year for rom-coms, and while I enjoyed many of the new movies to grace the genre, none came close to beating Bros as my favorite. The queer rom-com features a cast made up of entirely LGBTQ+ actors led by Billy Eichner and Luke MacFarlane. Eichner plays Bobby, a podcaster and museum director who is content with the lack of romantic relationships in his life — until he meets hot-but-boring Aaron (MacFarlane), a lawyer who Bobby has an instant connection with. Rom-coms often live or die by the chemistry between the leads, and Eichner and MacFarlane have it in spades. It jumps off the screen in the über-romantic moments and the more mundane moments equally. Watching Bobby and Aaron’s relationship play out over the course of nearly a year, complete with nods to some classic 90’s rom-coms is a journey I’m happy to take over and over again. While it doesn’t completely reinvent the genre, Bros is romantic, heartfelt, and laugh-out-loud funny.
