Bob Iger: “Its Time For Newness At Marvel”

Following the disappointing box office results of Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, many people are wondering if the dreaded “super hero” fatigue has finally set it.

While Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was a bonafide smash hit, other post-pandemic films such as The Eternals, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness have struggled with critics.

Time For New Characters?

At the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference on Thursday, Disney CEO Bob Iger hypothesized that it may be the specific characters, not superhero films as a whole, that audiences are tired of.

“Sequels typically worked well for us,” Iger said “Do you need a third and a fourth for instance? Or is it time to turn to other characters?”

A Breakneck Speed

Following nearly two years of releasing content at a breakneck speed, Disney and Marvel have decided to slow down the pace.

Utilizing both feature film and streaming shows to tell the larger MCU story has left some Marvel fans unable to keep up.

Marvel has now started to spread out their releases. After Quantumania, the next studio release will be Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in May. That film will be followed by a postponed The Marvels in November.

Marvel Is Here To Stay

Despite struggling in ways that Disney’s tentpole franchise never has, Bob Iger is not concerned about the long-term viability of Marvel.

“There’s nothing in any way inherently off in terms of the Marvel brand,” Iger said. “I think we just have to look at what characters and stories we’re mining, and you look at the trajectory of Marvel over the next five years, you’ll see a lot of newness.

“We’re going to turn back to the Avengers franchise, but with a whole different set of Avengers.”

While Disney may look to adjust its Marvel strategy, fans don’t have to worry about the MCU disappearing anytime soon.

“There are a lot more stories to tell,” Iger said Thursday.
