Blue Beetle Star Xolo Maridueña Teases Several DC Cameos

Cobra Kai star Xolo Maridueña has teased crowd-pleasing cameos in his upcoming superhero origin story, Blue Beetle. Speaking with The Wrap, Maridueña describes Blue Beetle as Green Lantern-meets-Iron Man, and hints that the DC outing will feature appearances from several familiar faces but keeps things close to the chest regarding whose faces they might be…

“I think if you’re a DC fan, there’s going to be more than just one character that you recognize. I can tell you that…He’s kind of like a fusion of Green Lantern and Iron Man,” Maridueña said. “He has a scarab from outer space that is attached to his body called Khaji da.”

So, who might appear alongside Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes in the upcoming Blue Beetle? Well, while at one time it would have been pretty easy to make an educated guess, with the likes of Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, Ben Affleck’s Batman, and Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel making cameo appearances across the DC Cinematic Universe, Blue Beetle finds itself in the position of being the first movie in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s recalibrated DCU.

This makes it highly unlikely that we will see Gadot, Affleck, or any other member of the Justice League make an appearance, which does not leave us with many options. Considering that Gunn is expected to keep the likes of John Cena’s Peacemaker and the rest of The Suicide Squad intact, could one of them feature in Blue Beetle somehow? Or, even more excitingly, could Blue Beetle feature our first look at The Creature Commandos or even David Corenswet’s Clark Kent/Superman, seeing as they are the only roles that have been cast for the DCU so far?

Of course, there is also the possibility that Blue Beetle will simply feature more niche, lesser-known characters only recognizable to die-hard DC fans. We will just have to wait and see…

Warner Bros. Pictures

Blue Beetle centers on recent college grad Jaime Reyes, who returns home full of aspirations for his future only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny.

Led by Xolo Maridueña as Jamie Reyes aka Blue Beetle, the movie also stars Adriana Barraza (Rambo: Last Blood), Damían Alcázar (Narcos, Narcos: Mexico), Elpidia Carrillo (Mayans M.C., the Predator series), Bruna Marquezine (Maldivas, God Save the King), Raoul Max Trujillo (the Sicario movies, Mayans M.C.), and stand-up comedian George Lopez (the Rio franchise), Belissa Escobedo (American Horror Stories, Hocus Pocus 2), and Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows), with Oscar winner Susan Sarandon (Monarch, Dead Man Walking) starring as the villain of the piece, Victoria Kord.

Blue Beetle is scheduled to be released in the United States on August 18, 2023, by Warner Bros. Pictures.
