Vertical video support, new models, and another BMD camera gets the Netflix stamp of approval.
With NAB 2023 now kicked off and well on its way, some of the biggest brands in the film and video game continue to slowly roll out major updates and cool new features for their cameras and products.
From the Blackmagic booth, we’re hearing some exciting new updates about AI-powered features being added to DaVinci Resolve and plenty of news regarding some of the brand’s most famous camera lines.
Let’s take a look at some of the updates coming to Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Cameras, a new URSA Mini Pro 12K OLPF, and the exciting announcement of one of yet another camera being added to Netflix’s exclusive approved camera list.
The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera Goes Vertical
You (maybe) asked for it, and now BMD has delivered a new update that adds support for vertical aspect ratio video to all Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Cameras! All joking aside, whether you actively shoot vertically or not, the need is absolutely there for content creators and video pros to take on vertical gigs more often.
Now you can easily create cinematic content for TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and anything else your heart may vertically desire. Simply rotate your BMPCC to shoot vertical aspect ratios such as 9:16 and 4:5 and the on-screen HUD will rotate all of your critical info like frame rate, shutter angle, and even frame guides to help you from any angle.
Plus, when you import your files into DaVinci Resolve your clips will automatically be tagged as vertical so they’ll appear correct on your timeline. So once you finish your vertical projects, uploading directly to your channel with direct exporting to TikTok or YouTube will be easy.

A New Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro 12K OLPF
We’re also excited to announce from the NAB floor a new BMD camera with the Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro 12K OLPF.
As a new model of the world’s most advanced digital film camera, the OLPF adds a high-performance low pass filter to the 12K Super 35 image sensor which promises to reduce artifacts such as moire and aliasing, while still preserving all the color and critical image details the URSA Pro 12K is renowned for.
Here’s an initial list of the specs and price for this BMD camera:

The URSA Mini Pro 12K Added to Netflix Approved Camera List
Finally, the most exciting news for any current Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro 12K owners or users, one of BMD’s flagship cinema cameras has recently been added to the Netflix Approved Camera List. Officially titled Cameras and Image Capture: Requirements and Best Practices, the list includes all of the capture requirements necessary to be qualified as an approved camera by the famous streamer, including dynamic range, resolution, codec, workflow compatibility, and more.
This means if you’re looking to film something for Netflix or simply rest assured that your favorite cinema camera is at least on par with any of the rest on the list, this accreditation is another accolade for one of the most prestigious cameras in BMD’s lineup.
