Barbenheimer mania ran wild over the weekend, but don’t you dare sleep on Matt Johnson’s hidden gem BlackBerry. Now streaming on VOD, the enthralling Canadian indie centers on the rise and fall of the pop culture relic known as the BlackBerry. Often referred to as “the world’s first smartphone, the device was immensely popular in the early 2000s, with its addictive nature earning the product the nickname “Crackberry.” Both Jay Baruchel and Glenn Howerton shine as co-CEOs Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie, but Howerton’s exuberantly volcanic, unhinged performance may be the actor’s best work yet… which says a lot. It won’t get the buzz of a Barbie or an Oppenheimer, but BlackBerry is one of the most enjoyable films of 2023.
