Ben Mendelsohn has now been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for four years, first appearing as the Skrull Talos in 2019’s Captain Marvel. The famed Australian actor later reprised his role in 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home and now the Disney+ series Secret Invasion.
Since his introduction in Captain Marvel, however, Talos has gone through a lot. The former Skrull leader was ousted by his own people, saw his wife killed, and now found himself fighting alongside Nick Fury to stop WWIII. Then the unthinkable happened when Talos was seemingly killed by Gravik, the genocidal leader of the Skrulls on Earth.
While death has often not been the end in the MCU, Mendelsohn is not revealing whether Talos is gone for good.
A Turning Point
“Well to answer that would be to be an enemy of what I do. My greatest loyalty is always to the audience, and I try not to undermine that in any way, shape, or form. But I can definitely tell you Talos’ death is a turning point.”
Talos’ death may be the catalyst that firmly entrenches his daughter G’iah on the side of Nick Fury. Earlier in the show, G’iah was an ally of Gravik and seemed to be entranced by his violent plan to take over Earth.
Talos Was Right
Mendelsohn, however, argues that Talos was the only Skrull with a feasible plan for his people, despite how unpopular it may have been with the younger generation.
“If you keep boiling the argument down, Talos’s argument is really the only one that stands. Because if you take the Gravik kind of perspective and you go for domination, there is one thing that Talos correctly surmises. You will not beat them. It’s their spot, and they have already shown that they can be incredibly effective at wiping out enormous numbers of beings. And so while you can look at what G’iah is going through and understand Gravik’s frustration. It’s similar to the frustrations that we’ve seen play out locally elsewhere,” he explained.
“And you might well say, ‘OK, yeah that’s right. Go for it and go for it now.’ But it’s reckless, destructive. And it’s immature both ideologically and in a realpolitik sense. So as idealistic as Talos may appear to be, he is really the only one with the genuine experience and genuine ability to call it. This is not a zero-sum game for humans and Skrull.”
With one episode left in Secret Invasion, the audience will soon have everything revealed. Whether or not Talos remains dead, it is clear that his impact on the universe will be felt for a long time to come.
The final episode of Secret Invasion streams on Disney+ this Wednesday.
