Batman Revealed in New Look at Long-Awaited DC Film in James Gunn Franchise

DC Studios is finally lifting the curtain on one of the most anticipated projects from James Gunn and Peter Safran’s superhero slate. Ahead of its 2028 release, the company revealed exciting new details about the Robin-centric Elseworlds tale that sees several DC icons get the stop-motion animation treatment.

As reported by Discussing Film, DC Studios showed off a new look at Dynamic Duo at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. Along with the reveal of Dick Grayson and Jason Todd’s costumes, it was confirmed that Batman appears in the film with a similar design to the popular “Absolute Batman” comic. Furthermore, the plot is set to follow Dick and Jason as “street rats” who eventually go their separate ways, with Dick ending up as Batman’s sidekick, Robin, while Jason becomes a member of the Red Hood gang.

The footage shown at Annecy confirmed that Dynamic Duo is going to blend several different filmmaking styles, including stop-motion, CGI, and live-action elements. The unique aesthetic has been consistently compared to the Spider-Verse franchise, which revolutionized how comic book adaptations utilized animation. While it will likely be some time until an official teaser is released to the public, it is a good sign that DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation has not been shy to show the progress being made on Dynamic Duo.

Although Dynamic Duo is not set in the DCU, it still remains as one of the most intriguing projects from the DC Studios slate. With Brave and the Bold still in early development, the upcoming animated hybrid film may be the next time we see Batman and Robin on the big screen. This is likely not what DC Studios had in mind when it announced the slate back in early 2023, but it is exciting to learn that the state of the DCU is not holding the company back from producing exciting new Elseworld projects, in addition to The Batman franchise.

Dynamic Duo is a creative collaboration between several major partners, including producers James Gunn, Peter Safran, and Matt Reeves, the last of which is currently filming his long-awaited DC sequel, The Batman – Part II. The animated feature is directed by Arthur Mintz based on a script by Matthew Aldrich, Scott Neustadter, and Michael H. Weber. Dynamic Duo is currently slated to release in theaters on Jun. 30, 2028.
