The final season of Barry is pure television magic. The emotional beats and existential melancholy are obviously riveting, but what I’m going to miss the most (outside of the revelatory performances) is the show’s distinct, magnetic brand of offbeat hilarity. The first two episodes of Season 4 are a perfect reminder of the show’s unique sense of humor (Noho Hank and Cristobal’s almost perfectly coordinated sales pitch at Dave & Buster’s, “Is he still mad at me?”), which always feels natural without undercutting the dramatic severity of the story. Barry has always been a masterclass at blending complex emotions with silly, sophisticated comedy. The final season is at an exceptional coda to an expertly told story.
