Here comes the pink wave.
The trailer for Greta Gerwig’s take on “Barbie” has arrived, much to the delight of Twitter users around the world.
The trailer appeared in cinema screenings of “Avatar: The Way of Water” before being released online Friday morning.
The trailer pays homage to the film “2001: A Space Odyssey” through its music and imagery. Margot Robbie stars as Barbie in Gerwig’s exploration of the iconic doll. Ryan Gosling joins as Ken, and Canadian actor Simu Liu also makes a brief appearance in the trailer.
The film was first announced in 2019, after a series of failed attempts to turn the almost 60-year-old “Barbie” brand into a film franchise.
Ahead of the film’s release, high-end designers like Valentino and Michael Kors have embraced Barbiecore pink, and retailers like Etsy have indicated a spike in searches for hot pink items.
Fans have reacted positively to the trailer, praising its emulation of “2001: A Space Odyssey” and references to classic Barbie dolls.
The film opens in theatres on July 21.
