Okay, by now you’re probably aware that Barbie is one of the most anticipated movies of the summer of 2023.
Directed by Greta Gerwig and written by Greta and Noah Baumbach, Barbie follows Barbie (Margot Robbie) as she lives in Barbie Land with Ken (Ryan Gosling) and other Barbies and Kens. However, one day, Barbie decides to take a trip to the real world.
Now, while very little is known about the movie, as press for it begins to ramp up heading into the summer, we’re starting to learn more and more about the plot, characters, and what it was like filming this soon-to-be iconic film.
Today, Greta, Margot, Ryan, and America Ferrera attended CinemaCon to tease Barbie, and it was our first official red carpet event for the movie.
Margot wore an all-pink outfit inspired by Barbie, no doubt, and it makes me even more excited for the premiere of this movie and what she might wear.
And Ryan really stole the show with a vibrant pink jacket and a T-shirt that read, “From director Greta Gerwig” in the iconic Barbie font.
Then, Greta, Margot, Ryan, and America took the stage at CinemaCon, and they were able to tease a little more about their characters, the filming process, and more.
Greta discussed what it was like writing the film alongside her partner, Noah Baumbach, and then directing it, according to Variety, saying, “We were making each other laugh and then we got to the end and we started to make each other cry. He thought it was very good and was maybe wanting to direct it.”
“And I said, ‘Step aside,'” Greta jokingly added. “There was a point I was so in love with it that I couldn’t imagine anyone else doing it.”
America added that she wasn’t a big Barbie girl growing up, but reading Greta and Noah’s script made her want to sign up for the project. She said, “There were moments when I didn’t know whether I was laughing or crying. By the time it ended, I was a Barbie girl, which is a testament to Miss Gerwig, who should be paid all the money for that.”
Meanwhile, Ryan revealed to the CinemaCon crowd what it was like becoming Ken, saying, “Up until this point, I only knew Ken from afar. I didn’t know Ken from within.”
He continued, adorably giving a shoutout to Greta and Margot, saying, “I doubted my Kenergy. I didn’t see it. But Margot and Greta conjured this out of me.”
Ryan also teased that Ken has “no sense of humor,” per Variety. Adding, “He’s utterly, deadly serious.”
Alongside Ryan’s comments on playing Ken, Margot said, “Everyone knows Barbie, and she’s never been on the big screen before. It was an enormously exciting opportunity,” per Variety.
In fact, the Barbie set was so amazing, Margot said other casts and crew shooting on nearby soundstages, like an upcoming Fast and Furious movie, would swing by just to see what it all looked like.
Basically, every single thing this cast and crew says about Barbie gets me more hyped for its release. I can’t wait to see what else is revealed in the coming months, and also can’t wait to be totally blown away when I see it for the first time.
Barbie hits theaters July 21, 2023!
