‘Backrooms’ Director Kane Parsons Addresses Chances of Making ‘Backrooms 2’

Amidst a slew of new blockbuster movies and highly anticipated sequels, A24 delivered another critically acclaimed hit in Backrooms, directed by Kane Parsons and written by Will Soodik. Released in theaters in the U.S. on May 29, the story follows a struggling alcoholic furniture store owner named Clark, who discovers a hidden portal in his warehouse leading to the “Backrooms,” a vast alternate dimension of endless yellow rooms and maze-like spaces. Led by The Lion King and MCU star Chiwetel Ejiofor, Parsons’ new film quickly became a hit as he made his directorial debut.

Backrooms enjoyed an impressive opening weekend at the box office, grossing $81.5 million in the U.S. on only a $10 million budget, giving A24 its biggest opening weekend ever. Due to that success, the conversation quickly turned to whether Parsons’ movie could get a sequel, especially considering that Parsons has been working on the concepts delivered in the first movie since he was 16 years old. Now, the director seems to have set the record straight on whether this story could continue into new chapters.

Speaking on The Town with Matt Belloni podcast, Backrooms director Kane Parsons further addressed the possibility of making a sequel to his new movie. Asked whether he was looking for a writer, Parsons said he was “not sure where that got out” and explained that it “seems more like a hallucination.”

This seems to contradict a Deadline report from a couple of days prior, which noted that Parsons was actively working on a second Backrooms movie. The report specifically explained that Parsons was said to be searching for a screenwriting collaborator to help him develop the story for the next movie, which would guide audiences through his horrifying initial nightmare. However, even with these comments from Parsons, his story might not be over just yet.

The director previously revealed that he would love to continue this story in a TV series, calling that idea his “dream scenario.” He felt that this would be “the most practical way to narratively get what you want” from the story if it were to continue. Parsons has long felt that sequels were an option ever since he started his YouTube series in 2022, even thinking in the past that it would be “a much slower road to get to where things are now.” While the chances of Backrooms turning into more movies or a TV show are still very much on the table, unfortunately, it does not seem to be in the cards for the foreseeable future.

Backrooms is now playing in theaters worldwide.
