The next Marvel cinematic event is scheduled to take place on May 7, 2027, when Avengers: Secret Wars hits theaters.
The grand finale of the MCU’s Multiverse Saga will round out the stories that made up MCU Phases 4, 5, and 6 and presumably tie up the events of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
While the possibility of seeing Secret Wars adapted to the big screen is exciting enough for Marvel fans, the specter of long-deceased heroes like Iron Man, Black Panther, or Black Widow returning has fans salivating at the mouth.
Will ‘Secret Wars’ Reboot The MCU?
Secret Wars will presumably bring together characters from other Marvel universes (Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men? High Jackman’s Wolverine?), however, the multiversal event may also serve an ulterior purpose.
According to Joanna Robinson, author of the new book MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, Marvel will use Secret Wars to “soft reboot” the MCU.
In an interview with The Watch, Robinson revealed that there is an unused quote from Kevin Feige “sort of implying that, like, Secret Wars will serve as a soft reboot in which they can prune everything.”
“That’s not to use a Loki-ism. [They’ll] prune everything that’s not working and just keep what is [working], or bring back people you thought were gone forever,” Robinson continued.
A Massive Risk
While rebooting the MCU would allow Marvel to streamline future stories and bring back some of the franchise’s most popular characters, it would also be a giant risk.
By reviving Tony Stark, or rebooting Steve Rogers, Marvel risks undermining the emotional weight of the previous films and alienating longtime fans.
While Secret Wars will give Marvel a narrative excuse to get out of the convoluted world that they have created, it could also destroy the MCU as we know it.
As always, the ball is in Kevin Feige’s court.
