Shortly after the release of its widely popular first season, “Avatar: The Last Airbender” has been renewed for both a season 2 and 3 at Netflix.
Since the show’s Netflix debut on February 22, “Avatar: The Last Airbender” has reigned as the #1 English TV show with 41.1M views in just the first 11 days. The series was #1 in 76 countries and in the top 10 in 92. The buzz for “Avatar: The Last Airbender” continues to heat up on social media where on TikTok, the #AvatarTheLastAirbender hashtag generated 1B global views in the series’ first seven days of release.
The series which is a live-action reimagining of the award-winning and beloved Nickelodeon animated series follows the story of Aang (Gordon Cormier), a young airbender who is also the Avatar, and who must now master all four elements, water, earth, fire and air, while keeping peace between the nations. Alongside his newfound friends Sokka (Ian Ousley) and Katara (Kiawentiio), siblings Aang embarks on a fantastical, action-packed quest to save the world to fight back against the fearsome onslaught of Fire Lord Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim). But with a driven Crown Prince Zuko (Dallas Liu) determined to capture them, it won’t be an easy task. They’ll need the help of the many allies and colorful characters they meet along the way.
Season 1 mainly focuses on Zuko’s efforts to capture them as well as Aang coming to terms with being the Avatar. We also get to see Katara mastering her craft as a water bender. Which happens a lot faster than the cartoon. The season culminates in a battle at the Northern Water tribe after a vision that Aang had of its destruction. As we see throughout season 1, Aang does not learn to water bend yet, which means most likely the writers have saved this for the second season.
There is a reason why fans love season two and three so much. One of the main reasons being the introduction of Toph, the badass, blind, earth bender who becomes Aang’s teacher. Something else to look forward to is Zuko’s redemption arc, which has been called one of the best of any character on TV, and seeing how Netflix handled Sokka and Suki’s relationship in season one, we are in for some more sweet moments as their relationship continues to evolve in the coming seasons. We will also get to see the epic battle between Aang and fire lord Ozai take place. The writers have a lot to work with, if season one is any indication, we are in for another great season. Season three will be the last, as it was with the cartoon.
Albert Kim (Sleepy Hollow, Nikita) serves as showrunner, executive producer, and writer. Jabbar Raisani (Lost in Space, Stranger Things) and Michael Goi are executive producers and directors alongside directors Roseanne Liang (also a co-executive producer) and Jet Wilkinson.
