Summer movie season is winding down and the fall festivals are right around the corner, which also means now is crunch time for Emmys season, as the round of voting for this year’s nominees began this week and ends in a matter of days.
This time, however, the countdown to “Succession” beating “Better Call Saul” for Outstanding Drama Series is going to take a bit longer. Due to the open-ended timeline of the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, the Emmys have been postponed from September 18 until January 15. While the campaigns will end soon, almost four months will pass before the season itself comes to a conclusion. Just in time for Sundance!
In this week’s episode of Screen Talk, Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson are joined by awards editor Marcus Jones, who discusses this unique timeline and how it may play out. He also provides some predictions for key categories beyond the obvious “Succession” domination and what has stood out as distinctive among this year’s nominees.
Elsewhere in this week’s episode, Kohn and Thompson touch on the recent decision to remove the budget cap on this year’s Gotham Awards nominations, the new trailer for “Maestro,” and the awards prospects for “May December.”
