Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom Trailer Arrives – The Hollywood Reporter

The long-awaited trailer for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is here.

James Wan directs the film, with Jason Momoa returning as the titular hero. It is a sequel to 2018’s Aquaman, which stands as the highest grossing DC movie of all time with $1.148 billion at the box office.

Until this week, observers had wondered when the Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom trailer would debut. The film opens on Dec. 20, and no trailer had materialized until now, despite the release date being just over three months away. Trailers for more recent DC films The Flash and Blue Beetle debuted around four months before they hit theaters.

The film — starring Jason Momoa, Patrick Wilson, Amber Heard and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II — comes in the midst of the SAG-AFTRA strike, which prevents stars from promoting projectts. If the strike is not resolved by December, the film will go out into hte world without the benefit of a publicity push from its stars.

It has been a long road for The Lost Kingdom. Like many films made in the COVID-19 era, The Lost Kingdom has pushed its date multiple times. At one point, it was going to open in December 2022. That changed to March 2023, before being pushed to Christmas 2023. The film also spanned three regimes at Warner Bros., and underwent a series of reshoots.

This is the final film taking place in the universe that began a decade ago with Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel (2013). After Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, executives James Gunn and Peter Safran will launch their own universe, beginning with Superman: Legacy, which is dated for July 2025.

When spoke to THR in April, he teased what to expect: “This movie has something to talk about [climate change], but it’s still a fun action-fantasy movie.”
