Apple TV+ Orders DreamWorks Animation Series ‘Curses’

Apple TV+ is expanding its kids and family programming slate with the order of the new animated series “Curses!” Variety has learned exclusively.

“Curses!” will premiere on the streaming service on Oct. 27. It hails from DreamWorks Animation with John Krasinski among its executive producers.

The series is described as a spooky adventure comedy. The official description states, “When a generations-long family curse turns Alex Vanderhouven to stone, it’s up to his two kids, Pandora and Russ, and his wife Sky, to return artifacts stolen by their ancestors to their rightful homes to finally lift the curse for good.”

The voice cast includes: Gabrielle Nevaeh as Pandora, Andre Robinson as Russ, Lyric Lewis as Sky, Reid Scott as Alex, Rhys Darby as Stanley, James Marsters as Larry, Rhea Perlman as Margie, Phylicia Rashad as Georgia Snitker, and Robert Englund as Cornelius.

Jim Cooper and Jeff Dixon created “Curses!” and serve as executive producers. Krasinski serves as executive producer, with Allyson Seeger co-executive producing. Leo Riley is supervising producer, with Chris Copeland and Justin Copeland serving as creative consultants. Riley also directs. Animation services are provided by CGCG and House of Cool.

Apple TV+ today announced a fun-filled autumn slate of all-new kids and family programming, featuring both CG and stop-motion animation offerings, including brand new series “CURSES!” launching October 27; season two of “Interrupting Chicken,” premiering September 29; and a new “Shape Island” Halloween special debuting October 20.

Season 2 if “Interrupting Chicken” will launch on Sept. 29. The series is based on the the 2011 Caldecott Honor-winning book series written and illustrated by David Ezra Stein. The series follows a young chicken named Piper with a love for storytelling. In Season 2, Apple states viewers will “watch Piper help Cinderella get to the ball, surf with a sea monster, and build a Royal Rollercoaster with the King, among other adventures!”

The series was developed by Ron Holsey, who serves as executive producer alongside Stein, Loris Kramer Lunsford, and Clint Eland. In partnership with Mercury Filmworks, the series stars the voice talents of Sterling K. Brown as Papa and Juliet Donenfeld as Piper. Guest stars for Season 2 include Wyclef Jean, who also performs an original song, Paula Poundstone, and more.

“Shape Island” is the stop motion series based on the bestselling trilogy of “Shapes” picture books written by Mac Barnett and illustrated by Jon Klassen. The new Halloween special will debut Oct. 20. Titled “Creepy Cave Crawl,” the special will see Circle and Square celebrate Halloween on their own — with no tricks or treats — after Triangle pranks them.

The series features the voices of Gideon Adlon, Scott Adsit, Harvey Guillén, and Yvette Nicole Brown. “Shape Island” was co-created by Barnett and Klassen, who serve as executive producers alongside Bix Pix Entertainment’s Kelli Bixler and Drew Hodges. Ryan Pequin serves as co-executive producer and head writer.
