Well that was a headline that I didn’t expect to be writing this morning! Marvel film Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has indeed taken a hit at the domestic box office due to the release of film Cocaine Bear directed by Elizabeth Banks.
Ant-Man still pulled in $32.2 million at the weekend box office but that’s down 67% from last week’s earnings. According to a recent piece in The Hollywood Reporter, this is due to some stiff competition from Cocaine Bear which brought in $23.1 million at the domestic box office over the weekend and proved popular with younger audiences.
As a result of the unusual box office competition, Ant-Man’s profits took a 69.7% drop at the domestic box office this weekend which according to THR is the WORST decline of a Marvel film ever. It officially surpasses the Black Widow which had a steep drop of a 67.8% during the pandemic.
However, its not all doom, gloom and cocaine bears for the third film in the Ant-Man franchise. The film, which official kicks off Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe officially earned $120.4 during opening weekend at the domestic box office and currently has a global box office total of $363.6 million.
In addition to competition from Cocaine Bear, insiders are also blaming the poor box office results for Ant-Man on the winter storms which have been sweeping across the country resulting in snowfall and other inclement weather conditions across Southern California and the Midwest.
As previously mentioned here at MickeyBlog, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has received a lukewarm reception from critics earning a meager 48% approval rating on RottenTomatoes.com. It did slightly better with audiences receiving a score of 84%.
