Anne Hathaway is currently tearing it up in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which has quickly become one of the biggest movies of the summer. She’ll appear in two more films this year, The End of Oak Street and Verity, but before their debut, one of Hathaway’s other 2026 flicks is set to arrive on streaming for the first time ever next month.
Anne Hathaway Stars in a Surreal Pop Music Thriller
Titled Mother Mary, Hathaway stars in the A24 movie as the titular character, who is one of the world’s biggest pop icons. Having been out of the spotlight for years, she’s all set to make her triumphant comeback with a performance for the ages, but before she can get there, she reconnects with Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel), an old friend and costume designer that once helped shape her image.
However, what should be a joyous collaboration quickly turns into something much more. As the two spend time together creating the outfit for Mother Mary’s return to the stage, things gradually descend into an intense, psychological confrontation. The pop star’s persona collides with her true self, blurring the line between fantasy and reality, thus creating a surreal exploration of fame, obsession, and artistic reinvention.
Featuring music written by Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX that’s performed by Hathaway herself, Mother Mary is directed by David Lowery (A Ghost Story, The Green Knight). The thriller also stars the likes of Hunter Schafer, FKA Twigs, Sian Clifford, and Atheena Frizzell, to name a few. Released on April 17 of this year, Hathaway definitely gives a fearless performance in the surreal flick, but sadly, it wasn’t enough to propel it to box office stardom.
Taking in just $3 million against a budget of $20 million, Mother Mary was a complete flop, despite getting solid reviews from critics. Scoring a 70% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s been called everything from “a haunting, surreal pop opera” to a movie that “pulls the rug from under you with a story that goes deeper and deeper into the darkest feelings of the human heart.” Audiences didn’t feel the same, as they rated it just 60% on the aggregator website, and 5.5 out of 10 on IMDb. Still, even though Mother Mary proved to be one of Hathaway’s most divisive movies as of late, it’s still worth checking out when it lands on streaming next month, if for nothing more than its dreamlike cinematography and the tremendous chemistry between the two leads.

Also called a “deliciously trippy experience” by Anna Smith from Rolling Stone UK, Mother Mary has finally set a streaming release date that’s right around the corner. Per Warner Bros. Discovery, the film will premiere on HBO Max starting Aug. 21. It’s being added to their library next month along with a host of other great movies, which include the streaming debut of Bob Odenkirk’s Normal on Aug. 14.
As mentioned, Hathaway still has two more movies releasing this year, one of which is the highly-anticipated sci-fi thriller, The End of Oak Street. Featuring dinosaurs invading a suburban neighborhood, a new trailer was recently released that showcases all the bizarre fun to come. Look for it to open nationwide on Aug. 14, and watch for Hathaway’s other upcoming movie, Verity, to open in theaters everywhere on Oct. 2.
