A new X-Files reboot from producer Ryan Coogler has been picked up by Hulu.
The pilot of the series was ordered by Hulu back in February, with Coogler set as the writer and director and Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel as the lead actors. Variety now reports that Deadwyler and Patel will play new characters, rather than stepping into the roles of Gillian Anderson’s Dana Scully and David Duchovny’s Fox Mulder.
Original X-Files creator Chris Carter first shared in 2023 that he had spoken with Coogler about a remake of the series. Coogler discussed the project during a podcast interview in 2025, saying that he wanted the episodes to be “really scary” while appealing to longtime fans of the original. The project picked up momentum when Coogler wrapped up his work on Sinners.
The new series centers on two highly decorated but very different FBI agents assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena. The pair forms an unlikely partnership as they investigate paranormal events.
“I’ve loved The X-Files for a long time, so getting the chance to write and direct the pilot has meant a great deal to me,” said Coogler. “What Chris Carter created is special, and we wanted to honor everything that made the original series connect with so many people while also finding our own way into that world. Danielle and Himesh, along with the rest of our cast, have brought such original perspectives and performances to these characters, and watching that come together has been one of the most rewarding parts of the experience. I couldn’t have asked for better collaborators than my crew, colleagues at Proximity Media and our partners at Onyx Collective and 20th Television. I’m grateful for the trust and support they’ve given us as we take on this new chapter.”
The project falls under Coogler’s five-year exclusive television deal with Disney, the parent company of Hulu.
