Amazon's New Smash Hit Assassin Series Dethroned by Streaming's Best Action Thriller

Prime Video‘s near-perfect action series is still on the streaming leaderboards one month after its premiere — but it’s been outpaced by one of the platform’s flagship offerings, which debuted its latest season this week. The streamer has a solid slate of bingeable shows, but it really scored big with a buddy comedy that takes the best elements of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Bridesmaids, and Killing Eve and forges its own identity. It also has high replay value, adding up to a comfort watch reminiscent of feel-good appointment TV. It’s still one of Prime Video’s most-watched shows, despite a small drop in the rankings.

Ride or Die is having an impressive run on Prime Video’s Top 10 TV shows, ranking third after 31 days on the chart. It was the streamer’s most-watched show last week, before mystery thriller Sterling Point took it down a notch. Now both shows have been toppled by Reacher, which took the top spot the same day its three-episode Season 4 premiere dropped. That’s expected from a show with such a massive following and a lead actor who can hold his own against Hollywood’s A-list action stars.

Ride or Die is also holding fast at #4 on the global charts, beating Legally Blonde prequel TV series Elle, as well as foreign contenders Pa Seguirte Queriendo and Yo soy Betty la fea. The list is notably dominated by lighthearted fare, aside from Reacher and Sterling Point, which took the top two spots. Ride or Die was released to an overwhelmingly positive reception and a 98% approval score on Rotten Tomatoes, thanks to its fast-paced action and endearing cast.

Ride or Die follows long-time best friends Debbie Claiborne (Octavia Spencer, Self Made) and Judith Burton (Hannah Waddingham, Ted Lasso) as they’re forced to go on the run after a botched hit job that exposes Judith’s double life as a hired assassin. Hijinx ensue as Debbie becomes a reluctant fugitive, unaware that her friend is an expert contract killer. Ride or Die is a buddy comedy, action-adventure, and road trip caper that takes the duo on a high-stakes chase across Europe with law enforcement and trained assassins in hot pursuit. The series is basically Thelma & Louise minus the graphic violence.

‘Ride or Die’ Confirms Chemistry On and Off-Screen

Spencer and Waddingham admitted they signed on to the project after hearing the pitch — and before consulting their respective agents. They immediately hit it off on their first Zoom meeting, and their effortless chemistry is evident throughout the series. They’ve also nurtured a real-life friendship while filming. Both threw themselves into their roles, and Waddingham trained to do her stunts, which she confessed was “incredibly demanding.” Spencer lent charm and heart to the dynamic, in keeping with her knack for playing homey characters. There’s no update yet on Season 2, but the season ended on a cliffhanger — it would be a shame if they don’t get a second outing.

Meanwhile, Alan Ritchson is off to his own new adventure in Reacher Season 4, which takes Jack Reacher deep into a deadly political conspiracy after witnessing a suicide on a transit train. He’s immediately hunted by federal authorities and dangerous operatives who believe he possesses evidence of a cover-up. Reacher Season 4 adapts Gone Tomorrow, Lee Child’s 13th Reacher novel.
