EXCLUSIVE: The Year Between is the the debut feature film from writer-director-star Alex Heller, who uses her own struggles with mental health to craft a story of a college sophomore diagnosed with bipolar disorder and how her family deals with the corresponding highs and lows.
Heller plays Clemence Miller, who is forced to move back home after a mental breakdown at school. Faced with the surprising diagnosis and a jarring return to the Illinois suburbs, she has to learn how to live with her well-meaning but frustrated family and find balance in a world that seems hellbent on thwarting her.
Steve Buscemi and Succession‘s J. Smith-Cameron play Clemence’s parents. Wyatt Oleff, Emily Robinson, Kyanna Simone, Rajeev Jacob and Waltrudis Buck also star.
Above is the first-look clip of the pic, which is making its world premiere Sunday in the U.S. Narrative Competition at Tribeca Fest. In the scene, Heller, Smith-Cameron listen as Dr. Lismoen (Buck) delivers news about Clemence’s condition.
