With Oscar balloting now in full force, it might be only appropriate to share my conversation with a man who has already won five of them and once again is in the hunt with his first film in seven years, Bardo, which has been shortlisted for Best International Feature. Alejandro G. Iñárritu joins me for this week’s edition of my Deadline video series, Behind the Lens.
Iñárritu became the first director ever to win back-to-back Oscars in the category — with Birdman (2014) and The Revenant (2015) — since Joseph L. Mankiewicz did it with A Letter to Three Wives and All About Eve in 1949-50. On top of that, he also won Best Picture and shared Best Original Screenplay for Birdman, as well as taking a Special Achievement Oscar for his remarkable 2017 Virtual Reality short Carne y Arena, which premiered at Cannes.
Amores Perros (2000) marked his first Oscar nomination, and many since then including 21 Grams, Babel, and Biutiful also been recognized with various major noms from the Academy. But his latest — full title: Bardo: False Chronicle of a Handful Of Truths — is his most personal yet, a movie about a filmmaker who has many questions about life, but not as many answers. It is an exploration of numerous themes close to its creator, and we talk about it, and most of the above mentioned movies as well. To watch our conversation just click on the link above.
