Adrienne Warren On Career, ‘Women Of The Movement,’ More — The Actor’s Side – Deadline

Deadline

Adrienne Warren is the reigning queen of the Tony Awards, at least until this year’s winners are announced Sunday night. Of course, Warren won the Lead Actress in a Musical Tony last year for her stunning turn as Tina Turner in Tina – The Tina Turner Musical a role she originated in London and that also got her nominated for the Olivier Award. She even announced this year’s Tony nominees and will appear on this weekend’s CBS broadcast as well.

Although her run in the show was truncated due to the Broadway closure during the pandemic, Warren was able to come back to it a limited run once the Great White Way reopened (the show with its new cast just announced an August close on Broadway that will be followed by a national tour). For the role she also won the Drama Desk, Antonyo and Outer Critics Circle honors.

Her first Tony nomination came for Shuffle Along, and her Broadway debut was in the spirited Bring It On.

After that Tina triumph, Hollywood has reopened its doors to her with a number of interesting projects, and that includes the Emmy-buzzed series Women of the Movement on ABC and which is now running on Hulu. She starred in it playing Mamie Till-Mobley, mother of the tragically murdered Emmett Till. Deadline recently announced a new series project with Hulu and the Women of the Movement team called Black Cake in which Warren will also star. On the big screen this fall she will be seen opposite Viola Davis in Sony’s The Woman King. She is also a co-founder of the Broadway Advocacy Coalition, a cause actively involved in encouraging social change. In addition to her Tina Tony, BAC also received  a special Tony Award at the same 2021 ceremony — probably a first for any performer on the same night.

We talk about all of this and the exciting things happening in her career as Warren joins me, appropriately during Tony Week, on location in New York City for my video series The Actor’s Side. To watch our conversation click on the video above.

Join me every Wednesday during Emmy season for another episode.
