Activision Blizzard provided a brief update on this year’s flagship Call of Duty game in its second quarter earnings announcement on Wednesday.
“Activision’s teams are hard at work on major new instalments in the franchise slated for the fourth quarter,” the publisher said. “Development of this year’s full annual premium release on PC and console is proceeding well.
“Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile, an ambitious, internally developed mobile game tightly integrated with the PC and console experience, continues to progress through regional testing.”
Call of Duty 2023 is reportedly a continuation of last year’s Modern Warfare 2, with development being led by Sledgehammer Games.
Activision seemingly confirmed this earlier this week when it said that Modern Warfare 2 operators, weapons and bundles will carry forward into this year’s series entry.
Maps and modes from Modern Warfare 2 will also be carried over to the new title, it has been claimed.
Activision said on Tuesday that the first details about the reveal event for this year’s game will arrive in its announcement of Season 5 for Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2, which is expected to launch in early August.
“Call of Duty approaches its 20-year anniversary in October with around 90 million monthly players, with over half of all engagement on the mobile platform,” the publisher said in its earnings results on Wedneday.
Activision also claimed that lifetime worldwide consumer spending on Call of Duty Mobile since its October 2019 launch topped $3 billion during the second quarter.
Microsoft and Activision Blizzard today announced they’ve agreed to extend their merger agreement until October 18, 2023, after their initial self-imposed deadline to complete the $69 billion deal expired on Tuesday.
The companies are still seeking regulatory approval for the deal from the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority, which is the final major roadblock preventing the transaction from being closed.
Over the weekend, Microsoft said it had signed a “binding agreement” with Sony to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation if the acquisition is completed.
