Mastodon is moving forward on Marrow Deep, its first new album in five years and the veteran heavy rock band’s first full-length since the departure and death of founding guitarist Brent Hinds. The LP arrives Aug. 28 via Loma Vista Recordings, to which Mastodon is now signed after 20 years on Reprise. It’s led by new single “Snakes for Dinner,” which reunites the Atlanta band with Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme for his first guest appearance on a Mastodon recording since 2006’s “Colony of Birchmen.”
The album follows 2021’s Hushed and Grim and finds founding members Brann Dailor, Troy Sanders and Bill Kelliher channeling years of personal upheaval into a record inspired by the Three Fates of Greek mythology and the fragile ties between life, loss and destiny. According to the band, Marrow Deep explores those themes through some of the most emotionally resonant and adventurous music of its career.
The record also marks the first Mastodon album to feature guitarist Nick Johnston, alongside significant contributions from keyboardist João Nogueira. Co-produced by the band at its West End Sound studio in Atlanta with Patrik Berger and Kurt Ballou, Marrow Deep was mixed by Andrew Scheps and includes additional guest appearances that have yet to be revealed.
“Snakes for Dinner” arrives following the band’s short film The Mastodon in the Room, which chronicled Mastodon’s efforts to process the unresolved grief surrounding Hinds’ exit after 25 years and his August 2025 death in a motorcycle accident.
“Bill, Brann and myself are thrilled that we still have the opportunity to do this, and we’ve got other members who are just over the moon to be in the band with us,” Sanders says. “That’s a magical feeling that makes us keep wanting to go to band practice. It’s reminiscent of the very beginning of our band, where all members are hungry, we’re united and excited to get to work. And we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to do this record.”
After Marrow Deep arrives, Mastodon will hit the road on the Poisonous Weapons Tour beginning Sept. 16, with support from Deafheaven and Alcest. The tour concludes Oct. 24 at the Dallas edition of mega hard rock festival Sick New World.
