Lord & Miller have finished taking their victory lap and are ready to get it.
We’ll discuss this and a few tidbits from comic book events in MarvelBlog News.
Let’s Get Down to Business

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller released a movie earlier this year.
Maybe you heard of it. Project Hail Mary was its name, and it did…okay.

As I type this, the film has earned nearly $650 million against a $200 million budget.
Just as importantly, audiences and critics alike raved about the movie.

Project Hail Mary currently stands as one of the most successful projects of the 2020s.
Sure, any film can achieve box office success or earn rave reviews from all.

A combination of the two is (sadly) super-rare in this business, though.
There’s no rest for the weary, though, as we learned from a recent interview.

The directorial team of Lord and Miller spoke on The Empire Podcast.
During this conversation, the duo reassured fans that they haven’t forgotten what’s important.

While Project Hail Mary became a terrific side quest, it’s not the main story.
We all know that’s the conclusion of the Spider-Verse trilogy.

Lord and Miller have already captured lightning in a bottle twice here.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse earned nearly $400 million against a $90 million budget.

When the film debuted in 2018, its stunning visuals entranced movie-goers.
As with Project: Hail Mary, it was a critic’s darling as well.
The Waiting Is the Hardest Part

Then, Sony commissioned a sequel that went well, albeit with an asterisk.
Sadly, fans suffered a five-year gap between the first and second Spider-Verse films.

Then again, their suffering proved a drop in the bucket compared to that of the animators.
Later reports detailed the SFX crunch that occurred while creating the film.

Let’s just say that Sony and Lord and Miller didn’t come across well in that piece.
To an extent, the duo has been repairing its image ever since.

Project: Hail Mary has mostly fixed the problem, but the story’s still percolating.
Should any sign of problems occur with the third film, we’ll hear about it.

In fact, we already have. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse already experienced a delay.
Expectations are unreasonably high for the sequel to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

And why wouldn’t they be? The second Spider-Verse film earned nearly $700 million.
I’m also on record as describing it as a masterpiece with an impeccable setup for the conclusion.

Miles Morales is facing his worst enemy, an uncannily familiar foe.
Meanwhile, Gwen Stacy has found her band, and it’s a scary collaboration.

To a larger point, after the five-year wait for the second one, fans hoped the third would arrive faster.
Presuming the 2027 date holds, it will, but…four years still feels like an eternity.

For their part, Lord and Miller have confirmed that they “are deep, deep in it.”
Presumably, that means that the Project: Hail Mary victory lap has ended.

There may be another one, depending on whether the film earns any Academy Award nominations.
I’m happy to report that Lord and Miller say they’re already in the editing room.

While animation works differently, they sound like they’re ready to do IMAX testing.
So, the film sounds like it’s on schedule.

Speaking of awards, the Emmys just announced nominations.
Marvel performed exceedingly well this time after a bit of a dry spell.

Spider-Noir earned 11 nominations, albeit none in major categories.
Wonder Man did exactly the opposite, earning just one nod.

However, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is up for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.
Jeremy Allen White didn’t even get one for The Bear. So, this is huge!

Alas, anyone who has seen Wonder Man is still outraged.
How in the world did Sir Ben Kingsley not get a nomination?

If I say anything else on this topic, I’ll fill up a swear jar. It’s that maddening.
On the Marvel convention front, Kevin Feige just appeared at the Shanghai Expo.

If there’s a big story ensuing, I’ll cover it more next week, as it happened too late for this edition.
This isn’t even Marvel’s biggest event of the month. That comes in two weeks.

On Saturday, July 25th, Marvel returns to the revered Hall H at Comic-Con.
Stating the obvious, this will be when the marketing kicks into overdrive for Avengers: Doomsday.

Marvel has promised that “surprise guests will share an exclusive look at what’s next for the MCU.”
Oh, and you should expect the final trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day now.

In fact, it may have come out by the time you read this. Marvel’s back, bay-bee!
