Just weeks ago, Jayden Adams was proudly wearing the Bafana Bafana jersey on football’s biggest stage.
On Saturday, July 11, that same stage fell silent for him.
Adams, 25, died on Saturday after his body was discovered at a property in Military Road, Schotsche Kloof in Cape Town.
Ahead of England and Norway’s 2026 Fifa World Cup quarter-final in Miami, players from both teams gathered as a moment of silence was observed for the 25-year-old South African midfielder.
Players, officials and supporters paused to remember Adams, who had represented South Africa at the tournament only weeks earlier.
The England national team also acknowledged the tribute, writing: “A moment of silence before kick-off, following the tragic passing of South Africa’s Jayden Adams. Rest in peace, Jayden.”
It was a powerful reminder of just how far news of Adams’ death had travelled.
South African comedian and former “The Daily Show” host Trevor Noah was among those moved by the scenes.
“A touching moment before kickoff. Sending love to Jayden Adams’ family and loved ones. ❤️,” Noah wrote on X.
Veteran South African television personality and talk show host Felicia Mabuza-Suttle admitted that the tribute had left her emotional.
“Teared up watching this moving moment of silence for Jayden Adams today during the FIFA World Cup match between England and Norway,” she wrote.
“Over 65,000 fans in the stadium and millions watching around the world. Gone too soon at 25 years old. MHSRIP🙏🏾.”
Popular American streamer IShowSpeed also joined those paying tribute to Adams.
During a live broadcast on Saturday, the online star paused to observe a moment of silence following news of the 25-year-old South African midfielder’s death.
From South Africa to Miami, tributes have continued to pour in for the Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder.
Adams’ long-time partner, Aqueelah Adendorf, described him as the love of her life, greatest supporter and best friend in a heartbreaking tribute.
“There are no words to describe the pain I’m feeling,” she wrote.
“Rest in peace, my love. Thank you for every memory, every laugh, every hug, and every moment we shared.”
Adendorf added: “A part of my heart left with you, and I will carry your love with me forever.”
Her post was flooded with messages of support, with South African musician Lady Du praying for strength for Adendorf during the difficult time.
Adams’ teammate Bradley Cross also responded to the post with a dove emoji, while popular digital creator Tebogo Dinah Molekoa offered her condolences to Adendorf and her family.
The tributes have also come from those who shared the football field and dressing room with Adams.
Bafana Bafana captain and Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams shared a tribute on his Instagram Stories.
Sundowns captain and Adams’ Bafana Bafana teammate Themba Zwane also remembered the midfielder on Instagram, while former Bafana Bafana defender Matthew Booth was among those who paid tribute.
One social media user reflected on how quickly life had changed for Adams following Bafana Bafana’s World Cup campaign.
“Not so long ago, you were singing, dancing, and enjoying the World Cup moments with Oswin Appollis. Now, we’ve woken up to the heartbreaking news of your passing.💔
“Life is truly unpredictable. Rest in peace Jayden Adams. 💔🕊️”
But the grief has extended far beyond South Africa.
Fifa president Gianni Infantino said it was “so incredibly sad” to hear of Adams’ death just weeks after Bafana Bafana’s historic World Cup campaign.
“My thoughts and condolences, as well as those of everyone at FIFA and the global football community, are with his family, friends and teammates,” Infantino said.
He added that Adams would be “sorely missed”.
Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano, one of the world’s most recognisable football reporters, also shared a tribute with his millions of followers.
“Terrible news. South Africa international and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams has sadly passed away at the age of 25. Heartbreaking. 💔🇿🇦,” he wrote.
Romano reflected on Adams’ World Cup debut and his role in Mamelodi Sundowns’ successful CAF Champions League campaign.
He also highlighted Adams’ professionalism following the death of his grandmother, Marianna Adams, shortly before Bafana Bafana’s World Cup match against Czechia.
“Two weeks ago, Adams lost his grandmother Marianna Adams but demonstrated remarkable professionalism by featuring for Bafana Bafana in their World Cup match against Czechia,” Romano wrote.
“Our condolences and thoughts go out to his family, friends, teammates, and everyone at Mamelodi Sundowns.
“Rest in peace, Jayden. 🕊️”
Police have opened an inquest into the circumstances surrounding his death.
And while South Africa mourns a Bafana Bafana star, the scenes in Miami showed that the grief is no longer being felt at home alone.
For one minute, on football’s biggest stage, the world stood still for Jayden Adams.
