This is a heady season for Andy Garcia. Next week he heads to the Cannes Film Festival where his new film is an official selection. He will be walking those famous red-carpeted steps with his cast for Diamond, in which he not only plays the title character but also wrote, directed, and even scored the film with Arturo Sandoval. That last fact shouldn’t be too surprising since Garcia is actually a Grammy winner for his musical abilities.
He could also find himself an Emmy nominee for his calculating Danny “Gallino” Morrell in the hit Taylor Sheridan series, Landman which he joined at the end of its first season and now plays a big part in its second opposite Billy Bob Thornton and Demi Moore among others.
Garcia joins me for this edition of my Deadline video series The Actor’s Side where we talk about all of this and much more in his long career that first saw him gain major notice in 1986’s Hal Ashby film 8 Million Ways to Die. It was Ashby’s last film, but a great beginning for Garcia who would go on to a co-star spot in The Untouchables the next year, followed by Black Rain, Internal Affairs and an Oscar nomination in 1990 for his role as Vincent Corleone in The Godfather Part 3.
The Ocean’s Eleven films, When a Man Loves a Woman, Things to Do in Denver When You’re Dead, Night Falls on Manhattan , For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story, Book Club, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again and many more are just some of his credits.
In our conversation we talk about joining Landman, how Sheridan wrote the role for him, his directing career that also included The Lost City, and memories of working with some of the greatest directors of our time. Plus plans for a new Ocean’s film, maybe a new Mamma Mia (he talks about singing with Cher), and having his latest film selected by Cannes where it will world premiere Tuesday night.
