The DCU is in full swing, with Supergirl and Clayface heading to theaters this year, but the original slate has been slow-moving at DC Studios. Several highly anticipated titles have not seen significant updates since they were first announced back in early 2023. Now, James Gunn has confirmed the fate of several DCU projects still in the pipeline, shutting down rumors of their demise.
On Threads, Gunn replied to a fan asking about the current status of Booster Gold and Paradise Lost. While the filmmaker previously confirmed that the latter was still on the way, rampant speculation about the fate of Booster Gold made its way online recently, when David Jenkins, the writer hired on the project, reportedly removed any mention of it from his social media. However, Gunn has confirmed that both are still in development at the studio, saying that “BG is in development,” while “PL” (Paradise Lost) is now in “extreme development.”
First announced in January 2023 as a part of the original DC Studios “Gods & Monsters” slate, Booster Gold has gone through several development changes. It was reported that Danny McBride, who recently wrapped up his acclaimed comedy series The Righteous Gemstones, was attached to the superhero series as a writer. However, he left the project at some point, paving the way for Our Flag Means Death‘s David Jenkins to write the pilot and potentially serve as showrunner. It is interesting to note that Paradise Lost seems to be further ahead than Booster Gold, despite the former not having a writer officially announced yet.
Ever since Booster Gold was announced, there has been a lot of speculation in regard to who could play the time-traveling superhero. The most prominent name to surface has been Kumail Nanjiani, whose previous entry in the genre was in Marvel Studios’ Eternals in 2021. Nanjiani showed up in rumors back in 2024, which was only supported by sightings of the actor with key members of the rebooted DC Universe. However, nothing official has been announced on this front, which makes sense as development on the project has seemingly stalled at some points.
Created by Dan Jurgens in 1986, Michael Jon Carter, aka Booster Gold, has been a prominent fixture in DC Comics for the past few decades. He is a superhero based in Metropolis who travels from the future and uses his advanced technology to become a vigilante in the present. Booster Gold has appeared in a number of animated titles, including Justice League Unlimited, but he made his live-action debut back in 2011 during an episode of Smallville, played by Eric Martsolf. The character appeared in Legends of Tomorrow, portrayed by Scrubs star Donald Faison, and was meant to become a member of the team before the show was canceled.
