James Gunn Confirms DCU’s ‘The Authority’ Movie Has Been Killed

The DCU looks to have an officially announced movie dead in the water, with James Gunn confirming the details. The comic book franchise has been thriving with bold early entries in Creature Commandos and Gunn’s 2025 Superman film. Even the second season of Peacemaker was a shining light for the DCU, with Supergirl slated to hit theaters in June and the Lanterns series premiere coming in August. The first teaser trailer for Clayface has also made its way online recently, giving fans their first look at the Batman villain’s solo outing, which comes from the mind of horror master Mike Flanagan.

When Gunn and Peter Safran took over creative control of Warner Bros.’ DC slate, they came out of the gate with a bold vision and an eclectic lineup. Some of those ideas are still in development, like movies based on The Brave and the Bold and Teen Titans. Others have already been scrapped, like the Arkham Asylum TV series, while some characters, like Booster Gold, are still being developed to some degree. One of the projects fans were eager to see in the DCU was The Authority, which was announced as part of the superhero franchise’s plans in 2023. The Authority movie has yet to come to fruition, with Gunn now providing new details suggesting the project isn’t moving forward, at least for now.

A post on Threads by idontbeatgames was merely speculating on the state of The Authority movie Gunn had announced for the DCU, when the director himself responded. Gunn confirmed a prior slip of the tongue to user ted.kendrick, who posited that the Superman director was writing the script for The Authority himself, with Gunn clarifying that he would never have had the time. However, there was a script that “wasn’t quite there,” and Gunn confirmed they couldn’t fit it into their current DCU plans, killing The Authority movie. Still, he offers hope for the future of the beloved comic book series, but a movie doesn’t look to be happening anytime soon. Gunn wrote:

“Just a normal slip of the tongue. I would have never had time to do this and although I know this is a popular theory online I never had an intention of writing or directing The Authority. The script wasn’t quite there but more importantly it didn’t work in terms of the larger DCU both in terms of the story and practical concerns. Maybe some day. Not soon.”

The Authority was created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch in 1999, centering on an eclectic superhero team like the Justice League or the Avengers, but with a roster featuring many original characters created for the series. The DCU prominently featured The Engineer in 2025’s Superman, who stems from The Authority, giving fans of the series hope that they would see other characters as well. While the live-action film appears dead for the time being, other characters may pop up in the DCU, as fans would love to see Jenny Sparks, Apollo, or Midnighter, but that remains to be seen.

The DCU still has plenty of exciting projects on the horizon, with Clayface presenting a bold body-horror film that is sure to challenge comic-book movie tropes. Gunn also appears to have a fondness for The Authority, with his inclusion of The Engineer likely the first of many characters from the comic to appear in the fledgling franchise. The Man of Tomorrow movie is bringing Brainiac into the DCU, introducing a massive villain sure to offer unique opportunities for the franchise moving forward. While fans may be disappointed by the news, The Authority could still have a future in the DCU; it may just take some more time.
