As far as unique new cameras go, this latest from Canon is pretty much a one-of-one. Designed to meet the rigorous demands of ultra-low-light full-color video shooting, the Canon MS-510 is an innovative multipurpose camera that builds on the already audacious technology unveiled with its predecessor, the MS-500.
Built around a 1″ 3.2MP ultrahigh-sensitivity SPAD (Single-Photon Avalanche Diode) sensor that uses photon counting to accurately detect light with less noise than CMOS sensors, this is an interesting camera that offers some intriguing capabilities—even if it’s not the most filmmaking-focused option in the company’s arsenal.
Canon MS-510 Ultra-High-Sensitivity Interchangeable-Lens Camera
Ideally, an option for those looking to capture high-fidelity video of nocturnal wildlife and natural nightscapes, as well as enterprise-grade functionality for capturing high-security areas such as public infrastructure, seaports, and more. This isn’t a filmmaking camera per se, but it’s quite interesting nonetheless.
Designed for those seeking the aforementioned excellent performance in near-total darkness, the MS-510 features a new Canon 1-inch Single-Photon Avalanche Diode (SPAD) sensor with approximately 3.2 million pixels and improved Near-Infrared (NIR) sensitivity.
Powered by its latest technology, the MS-510 achieves a minimum subject illumination of 0.0006 lux, a significant improvement over its predecessor’s 0.001 lux, enabling bright, full-color imaging in ultra-low-light environments where traditional cameras can fail.
Check It Out In Person
Really more than just a camera, the Canon MS-510 is a sophisticated tool for critical infrastructure monitoring and law enforcement. Some more key features include:
- Broadcast-Grade Optics: Equipped with the broadcast industry standard B4 mount, the MS-510 has a built-in magnifying optical system offering compatibility with Canon’s extensive lineup of 2/3-inch ultra-telephoto broadcast zoom lenses, enabling crystal-clear identification over vast distances.
- Advanced Image Processing: Integrated Haze Compensation automatically reduces the interference of mist and haze while adjusting contrast, and Smart Shade Control corrects for highlights and shadows to maintain image integrity in challenging lighting conditions.
- Customizable Imaging Profiles: Users can create up to 20 customized image quality settings or utilize Custom Picture Presets to prioritize wide dynamic range or maximum noise reduction, depending on the environment.
If you’re curious to check this bad boy out in person, it will be on display at NAB 2026 in Canon’s booth #C3825, where attendees can see the MS-510 capture footage of its bright, full-color imaging in low-light environments.
