The 10 Funniest Characters from Season 1 of the Apple TV+ Comedy

The 10 Funniest Characters from Season 1 of the Apple TV+ Comedy

Since its launch in the Fall of 2019, Apple TV+ has gone on to produce some of the best television series of the past decade. Spreading its success among several different genres, the streaming service has proved to be one of the most successful at creating a pool of quality content as opposed to one of quantity. One standout series comes in the form of 2022’s The Afterparty from the hilariously brilliant minds of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

This who-done-it comedy brings together some of the funniest names working in Hollywood to weave a murderously hilarious narrative about a group of friends who find themselves as murder suspects at the after-party following their high school reunion. The colorful cast of characters each brings a different element of funny to the series, but which one stands out as the best? These are the ten funniest characters from season 1 of The Afterparty.

10 Detective Culp – John Early

Sony Pictures Television Studios

Known for his small roles on 30 Rock, Broad City, and Bobs Burgers. John Early plays Detective Culp in The Afterparty, second in command to Tiffany Haddish’s Detective Danner, Culp isn’t quite the full-blown stereotypical bumbling police sidekick, but he comes as close as you can get. Uncovering some vital clues along the way, this reoccurring character is good for a laugh or two throughout the series.

9 The Jennifers – Tiya Sircar and Ayden Mayeri

Tiya Sircar and Ayden Mayeri, together they make up the hilariously stuck up and pregnant duo of “The Jennifers”. Both in modern day and in flashbacks, The Jennifers are portrayed as your classic high school mean girls to hilarious effect. What would a high school reunion be without the popular girls, right?

8 Zoë – Zoë Chao

Zoe - The Afterparty
Sony Pictures Television Studios

Relatively unknown actor Zoë Chao shines as her namesake in season one of the series. Playing the love interest of our main character Aniq and ex-wife to another named Brett, her role in the show is to not provide gut-busting laughs, and she is one of the straighter played throughout season one. However, Zoë provides her fair share of comedic moments throughout.

7 Detective Danner – Tiffany Haddish

Detective Danner - The Afterparty
Sony Pictures Television Studios

Primarily known for her resume of comedic films and over-the-top performances, Tiffany Haddish is somewhat subdued in comparison as Detective Danner in The Afterparty. Determined to solve the murder at all cost and prove herself as a top-notch detective, Danner digs deep into the psyche of the ensemble cast of characters with hilarious intent. Fans of the series and Haddish in general will get another dose of Detective Danner in season two of The Afterparty.

6 Chelsea – Ilana Glazer

Chelsea - The Afterparty
Sony Pictures Television Studios

Bursting onto the scene in the hit comedy series Broad City, Ilana Glazer plays the troubled character of Chelsea throughout season one. Her past transgressions with both Brett and the deceased Xavier come to light throughout the season, and Glazer delivers the comedic moments despite some of these heavier realizations.

5 Aniq – Sam Richardson

Aniq - The Afterparty
Sony Pictures Television Studios

After starring in a reoccurring role on the hit HBO series Veep, it certainly feels like the world is finally getting to see the comedic talents of Sam Richardson on full display. With hilarious cameos on Ted Lasso, his part in the cancelled-too-early comedy Detroiters, and his main role as main suspect Aniq on The Afterparty. Richardson is here to stay as a comedic force in movies and on television.

4 Walt – Jamie Demetriou

Walt - The Afterparty
Sony Pictures Television Studios

The running joke revolving around Jamie Demetriou‘s Walt throughout season one of The Afterparty is that no one can seem to remember him from high school or any of the proposed antics he claimed to commit. This hilariously played sadness helps to make Walt one of the prime suspects in the murder of Xavier.

3 Yasper – Ben Schwartz

Yasper - The Afterparty
Sony Pictures Television Studios

Put the improv loving Ben Schwartz into anything and he is sure to deliver the comedy. Whether he is playing Jean-Ralphio Saperstein on the television series Parks and Recreation, or popping up in bit roles on the hit comedy web series Jake and Amir. As the aspiring musician Yasper in The Afterparty, he spends most of the series helping his best friend Aniq prove his innocence. An all too ironic goal when it is discovered that Yasper is the killer.

2 Brett – Ike Barinholtz

Brett - The Afterparty
Sony Pictures Television Studios

An alumni of the sketch comedy series MADtv, Ike Barinholtz plays the ultra masculine Brett in this Apple TV+ comedy series. Whether Brett is involved in a high speed chase to retrieve his daughter’s toy, or showing off the PSI of his urination. Barinholtz as Brett delivers some of the funniest moments of the series.

1 Xavier – Dave Franco

Xavier - The Afterparty
Sony Pictures Television Studios

Features exclusively in flashbacks, as he is the murder victim, Dave Franco‘s comedic talents are on full-display as the megastar Xavier, formerly known as Eugene Xavier Duckworth, Jr. Franco plays the hilariously cocky Xavier to perfection all the way to his unfortunate end. R.I.P. Xavier.
