Robert Downey Jr. Worried That Playing Iron Man For 11 Years Would Hurt His Acting

For over a decade, Robert Downey Jr. was Iron Man.

The veteran actor’s performance as Tony Stark in 2008’s Iron Man would go on to launch the Marvel Cinematic Universe, while Downey Jr. and his fellow Avengers became pop culture phenomena.

After portraying Iron Man in ten films over 11 years, Tony Stark died saving the world in Avengers: Endgame, ending Downey Jr.’s Marvel run. While the actor has only ever said good things about his time working with Marvel, he admitted in a recent interview that he did have some concerns about playing the same character for over a decade.

Stretching Other Muscles

“You start to wonder if a muscle you have hasn’t atrophied,” Downey Jr. said.

Downey Jr. is set to star as Lewis Strass in the upcoming Christopher Nolan epic Oppenheimer.

When asked if he was worried that his acting skill suffered after being focused on Marvel for so long, Downey Jr. admitted that he was.

“Yes. 100%, and I knew there was a point where Christopher Nolan was endorsing, let’s work those other muscles, but let’s do it while rendering you devoid of your usual go-to things.”

A Different Robert Downey Jr.

A key point of emphasis, when it came to Nolan’s vision for Downey Jr.’s Oppenheimer performance, was that he didn’t want the actor relying on his trademark charm.

According to Downey Jr., he had to stay away from “usual go-to things,” which Downey Jr. described as “fast-talking, charming, unpredictable, blah, blah, blah.”

“He’s one of our great actors, and though a generation of kids know what a great movie star he is, they’ve not seen his subtlety and brilliance,” Nolan recently told the Los Angeles Times about casting Downey Jr. “I wanted to get him to do something completely different, to lose himself in another human being. When was the last time we’ve seen that? ‘Chaplin’? Directors are very aware of how talented Downey is, but because of his incredible energy that can punch through the screen, finding the right thing for him is difficult.”

Oppenheimer will open in theaters nationwide on July 21.
