Several iconic speedster villains are returning for The Flash series finale as the Arrowverse drama is wrapping up season 9. The Arrowverse is close to bidding farewell to its longest-running series in the franchise. After starring as Barry Allen for a decade, Grant Gustin’s time as the Scarlet Speedster is coming to an end this year with The Flash season 9. The final season is currently airing, as the 13-episode season premiered only a few weeks ago. With only 10 episodes left, The Flash season 9 is approaching its series finale that will air later this year.
As of this week, The Flash season 9 is officially filming its series finale in Vancouver, Canada. For the time being, production is expected to end in early March. Set photos revealed that Rick Cosnett is seemingly playing the DC villain Cobalt Blue in the final storyline.
Thanks to Candagraphs (via Arrowverse Scenes), the outlet released new set photos of what appears to be one massive series finale. The images reveal that Cobalt will not be facing the Scarlet Speedster alone as both Savitar, Reverse-Flash, Zoom, and Godspeed are returning for The Flash series finale. In the shown photos, the league of evil speedsters is going up against members of Team Flash.
How The Flash Season 9 Is Setting Up Its Biggest Finale
With multiple villains returning from past seasons, this will be the biggest The Flash finale, as this has never happened before. It had already been announced that Teddy Sears would return to the Arrowverse drama as Hunter Zolomon, a.k.a. Zoom. Godspeed was last seen in The Flash season 7, although it’s unclear if Karan Oberoi is reprising the role of August Heart. It’s possible Godspeed will only appear while being masked, with a stunt double filling in for him. Thus far, The CW has not announced Oberoi to be returning in the final season.
Following his death in season 8, Eobard Thawne will find his way back somehow in The Flash season 9. Matt Letscher will appear as the original Eobard, but Tom Cavanagh may be the one who plays Reverse-Flash for the series finale. How Savitar is back is the biggest mystery, but could perhaps be related to Cobalt as he maybe found a way to resurrect the vicious speedster. But with a whole league of speedsters by his side, The Flash season 9 is staging the ultimate speedster war, which is a huge way to end the series.
While there will obviously be answers for how all of them are back, The Flash season 9 is leaning into its strongest villains for the end. Since Barry is currently dealing with Red Death, perhaps that will somehow be a soft setup for the rise of Cobalt and his band of speedsters. With The Flash series finale wrapping filming soon, time will tell how these fan-favorite characters are returning to the Arrowverse.
