UPDATED with release date: What We Do Next, the thriller written and directed by Stephen Belber starring Corey Stoll, Karen Pittman and Michelle Veintimilla, will hit theaters exclusively March 3 via a platform rollout in Los Angeles and New York.
Veintimilla (The Good Wife) plays Elsa Mercado, who has been released from prison after serving 16 years for killing her father. New York City Councilwoman Sandy James (Pittman, from The Morning Show) and corporate attorney Paul Jenkins (Stoll, from Billions) are forced to grapple with their involvement in the original crime.
Producers Unbridled Films and Mangano Movies & Media are handling distribution, which is expected to widen after opening in L.A. and NYC.

PREVIOUSLY, April 2022: What We Do Next will be making its world premiere at Cinequest’s Cinejoy Film Festival on April 14. The film is an emotional thriller sitting at the intersection of race, class, and criminal justice, that centers on the three powerful and dynamic performances from its leads.
Written and directed by Stephen Belber (Match starring Patrick Stewart, Management starring Jennifer Aniston), and stars Corey Stoll (Billions, House of Cards), Karen Pittman (And Just Like That… The Morning Show), and Michelle Veintimilla (Big Sky, Gotham). It was filmed safely and successfully in the fall of 2020 in only six and a half shooting days, pre-vaccines, during the height of the Covid pandemic.
The film is about a New York City politician (Pittman) climbing the political ladder who is forced to navigate her complicated past with a young woman recently released from prison (Veintimilla) and a corporate attorney with whom she shares an equally complicated history (Stoll). Power constantly shifts among the three characters as they fight for their version of the truth.
Chris Mangano (Standing Up, Falling Down, Don’t Tell a Soul), Merry-Kay Poe (Don’t Tell a Soul) and Max Neace produced the film, which is a co-production between Poe’s Unbridled Films and Mangano’s Mangano Movies & Media. Stephen Belber, Brian Tanke, and Matt Bronson are executive producers on the film, with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Lynn Nottage serving as co-producer.
Verve Ventures and Literary Agency and UTA Independent Film Group co-represent the film for sales.
