The Deadline Studio at Sundance Film Festival runs January 20-23 at Hotel Park City, where the cast and creatives behind the best and buzziest titles in this year’s lineup sit down with Deadline’s festival team to discuss their movies and the paths they took to get to Park City.
SWEATSHOP GIRL
Section: Shorts Film Program
Director: Selma Cervantes
Logline: Inés works as a seamstress in a sweatshop where pregnancy tests are periodically administered. When she becomes pregnant, she is sure that her condition will get her fired. She does everything she can to keep it a secret.
Panelists: Selma Cervantes (director, producer, writer), Bruno Gaeta (director of photography), Iván Lopto (sound designer, composer), Daniel Lopto (sound designer, composer)
First Screening: January 19, 5:00 p.m MST, Prospector Square Theatre, Park City
Key Quote: Director Selma Cervantes on casting Oscar-nominated actress Yalitza Aparicio in Sweatshop Girl: “I always ask myself the same question. I’m like, ‘How did we get so lucky?’ We had this idea of… it would be great if we had her. We didn’t believe it when she said yes. So, we just sent her the script and then we had to wait for like a month and she said, ‘Yeah, let’s do this.’ From her performance in Roma you can tell she’s very vulnerable, so I thought maybe we can do something in the same path.”
