The Take: Elon Musk’s Twitter; Jimmy Kimmel Oscars; Black Panther 2

It’s only been two weeks since Elon Musk purchased Twitter for $44 billion and it’s not going well. A barrage of celebrities are leaving the platform, including Whoopi Goldberg, and the new owner suspended Kathy Griffin’s account after she changed her name to “Elon Musk.”

ABC and the Oscars announced that Jimmy Kimmel will be returning to host the 2023 ceremony. In a year where multiple blockbusters are likely to be in the conversation, such as “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and “Top Gun: Maverick,” the Academy hopes to recapture its ratings from the glory days.

Speaking of “Wakanda Forever,” director Ryan Coogler and stars Angela Bassett and Letitia Wright were on the cover of Variety this week, speaking about the difficulties of shooting after the death of Chadwick Boseman and what to expect from the latest Marvel entry.

Finally, a woman has filed a lawsuit against Warren Beatty, alleging that the actor coerced her into having sex with him in 1973 when she was 14 or 15 years old. Kristina Charlotte Hirsch filed the lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday. The suit does not cite Beatty by name but identifies the defendant as having been nominated for an Academy Award for his role as Clyde in “Bonnie and Clyde” — a clear reference to Beatty. He has yet to respond to the lawsuit.

Hosted by Variety chief correspondent Elizabeth Wagmeister and senior awards editor Clayton Davis, Variety’s “The Take,” presented by Apple TV+, is a weekly series that navigates the week’s top stories from entertainment, pop culture and media, while providing expert analysis and exclusive insight on what’s buzzing in Hollywood. Filmed in Variety’s state-of-the-art studio in Los Angeles, new episodes are released on Fridays on Variety.com, YouTube and social media.
